Howto install Nvidia 185.18.36 drivers in Ubuntu (64 bit)

This tutorial will explain howto install Nvidia 185.18.36 drivers in Ubuntu (64 bit) and enable visual effects.


First you need to download Nvidia drivers from here

1) Right-Click on the file: "Nvidia 185.18.36 Linux x64.run" and Click on "Properties"

2) Write down the text to the right of "Location:"

3) Close the "Properties" Window, and any other open Windows

4) Press "CTRL + ALT + F1"

5) Type: sudo bash

6) Press "Enter"

If prompted, type your password, and then press "Enter"

7) Type: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

8) Press "Enter"

9) Type the text you wrote down from Step 2

10) Now immediately after what you typed in Step 8, Type: Nvidia 185.18.36 Linux x64.run

11) Press Enter

12) Follow the prompted instructions until the installation is complete

13) Once the installation has completed, press "CTRL + ALT + F1"

14) Restart your computer

Display Driver Installation Completed

Follow this procedure to Enabling Visual Effects

1) From the "Desktop Panel" Click on System

2) Click on "Preferences"

3) Click on "Appearance"

4) From the "Appearance Preferences" Window, Click on the "Visual Effects" Tab

5) Click on one of the "Visual Effect" options from the list

6) Click on the "Close"

Enabling Visual Effects Completed
