Sometimes you will accidently add an applet to the bottom where your windows you go to when you minimize, or you may accidentlly delete the applet that displays the windows. This can be a major problem because, other than being extremely annoying it will cause you to not be able to maximize a window and have to reopen the application everytime you minimize it. Even worse it can casue you to lose your work if you are working in a program such as Open Office or GIMP.
First open up a terminal window: Applications > Accessories > Terminal
Enter the following command
killall gnome-panel
If there was an applet blocking your windows list that should have resolved the problem. If not read on.
Now Right click on the bottom panel and click "Add to Panel"
Scroll down to the bottom and click "Window List" then click add and click close.
Your windows should appear now.

How to Make your windows show up on the bottom in Ubuntu

I was confused for a few minutes by this, because I removed that bottom panel & window list soon after my first install last year. :)
An alternative solution is the approach I use to save screen space... I keep a desktop/workspace pager near the center of my top bar, and then place the drop-down Windows Selector applet close by. That way, I have a visual of where all of my windows are at *and* a menu to grab them from if one is hidden.
Another option, of course, is to quickly install/open a dock program from the repository, like Avant Window Navigator. That way, the user can at least get to the inaccessible window and save whatever they were doing. (Judging by its popularity, the user might even decide to stick with it instead of the Panel.)
Thank you soo much. Helped me a lot :)
This worked like a charm for me, since I deleted the top panel and about everything from the bottom one (after installing cairo-dock) I was wondering how I could get this back thanks for showing me how I am going to re-post this to my blog, cheers friend.
